Burdock Root Tea
Burdock root (Arctium lappa) tea is one of the mainstays in my house year round but, is especially beneficial during the winter season for the deep healing and nourishment it provides for the skin from the inside to the outside.
I know, it is difficult to think of this plant, the one with
the burrs that stick to your pets or your socks whenever it seems you are
within 100 feet of the plant, as one that you might be attracted to but, it
certainly is attracted to YOU! And for good reason.
Autumn is the time of year to harvest the root, if you were going to do so,
so it is ready to begin to sip in the winter months to keep your skin feeling
silky into the dry season.
Among other benefits, Burdock has been a valuable remedy for the treatment
of skin conditions which result in dry and scaly skin.
And it tastes good too! Naturally sweet and delightfully rooty in flavor,
burdock root tea will surprise you. You can usually find Burdock root, cut
and dried, in your local natural food store and can sometimes find it fresh,
also in the same store, in the produce section of the market. (Burdock root
is a great addition to soup stocks or even cut up and added like carrots.
I suggest adding just a bit at a time so as not to overwhelm the family.)
Pot of Tea
Put 1 TBS burdock root and about
4 cups of water in a pot and bring to a boil. Lower flame and simmer for about
5- 8 minutes. Keep the lid on to retain essential oils and goodness. Turn
off and let sit a few minutes longer. Strain and serve. Add a bit of honey
if you like but burdock has a lovely, naturally sweet flavor.
